Custom Engraving: Adding a Personal Touch to Wood

·Schmidt Woodcraft·6 min read

A beautifully crafted cutting board or serving tray is already a meaningful gift. But add a name, a date, a monogram, or a short message, and it becomes something else entirely. It becomes personal. Custom engraving turns a well-made piece of woodwork into a keepsake, the kind of thing that lives in someone's kitchen for decades and carries a story with it every time it is used.

At Schmidt Woodcraft, engraving is one of our most requested custom options. Here is everything you need to know about what we can engrave, how it works on different woods, and how to choose a design that looks great and lasts a lifetime.

What Can Be Engraved

The short answer is: almost anything that can be represented as a clean, two-dimensional design. The most popular engraving requests we see fall into a few categories:

  • Names and monograms. A single name, a couple's names, or a family monogram. These are the most classic engraving choices, and they never go out of style.
  • Dates. Wedding dates, anniversaries, birthdays, or the date a family moved into a new home. A date paired with a name or monogram creates a simple, elegant design.
  • Short messages or quotes. A brief phrase that means something to the recipient. We keep these short to maintain readability and visual balance on the piece.
  • Logos and business marks. For corporate gifts, restaurant branding, or promotional items, we can engrave company logos with clean results.
  • Simple illustrations. Line-art style designs, botanical motifs, mountain silhouettes, or other simple graphics. These work best when the lines are clean and the design is not overly detailed.

We work with you to refine the design before engraving. If you have a specific image or layout in mind, send it to us. If you just know you want engraving but are not sure what design to choose, we can suggest options based on what has worked well for other customers.

How Engraving Works on Different Woods

Each wood species responds a bit differently to engraving, and understanding these differences can help you choose the right combination of wood and design.

Walnut is one of the best woods for engraving. Its dark color creates a beautiful contrast when the engraving reveals the lighter wood beneath the surface. Text and logos stand out clearly against the deep brown background. If you want maximum visual impact from your engraving, walnut is usually the best choice.

Hard maple engraves cleanly, but because the wood is so light in color, the contrast between the engraved area and the surrounding surface is more subtle. The result is elegant and understated. Maple works well for monograms and designs where you want the engraving to feel integrated with the piece rather than jumping out visually.

Cherry falls in between. The warm reddish tones provide moderate contrast with the engraved area, and the result feels classic and refined. Cherry is a great choice for gift engravings where you want the text to be clearly readable without dominating the piece.

Design Tips for Great Results

Over the years, we have learned what works and what does not when it comes to engraving on wood. Here are the tips we share with every customer considering custom engraving:

  • Simplicity wins. Clean, simple designs almost always look better than complex ones on wood. Fine details and tiny text can get lost in the grain pattern, especially on woods with strong figuring. Bold, clear elements translate beautifully.
  • Size matters. Text needs to be large enough to remain legible. We recommend a minimum letter height based on the font style, and we will let you know during the design phase if anything needs to be scaled up.
  • Placement is key. We typically engrave in a corner or along the bottom edge of cutting boards, keeping the main cutting surface clear. For serving boards that are primarily decorative, center placement can look stunning.
  • Font choice sets the tone. A script font feels romantic and works well for wedding gifts. A clean sans-serif feels modern and works well for business logos. A traditional serif font feels classic and works for just about everything. We have a selection of proven fonts, and we are happy to help you choose.

Before we engrave, you will receive a digital mockup showing exactly how the design will look on your piece. Placement, sizing, font, and spacing are all adjustable at this stage. We do not cut until you are completely satisfied.

Popular Engraving Ideas for Gifts

If you are ordering a custom board as a gift and want engraving but are not sure what to put on it, here are some of our most popular gift engraving ideas:

  • Wedding gifts. The couple's last name and wedding date. Simple, meaningful, and something they will see every day in their kitchen.
  • Housewarming gifts. The family name and the year they moved in. This turns a kitchen tool into a memento of a major life milestone.
  • Anniversary gifts. First names and the anniversary date. For milestone anniversaries like the fifth (the traditional wood anniversary), this is especially fitting.
  • Holiday gifts. A family monogram or surname. Something classic that makes the piece feel custom-made for their home.
  • Corporate gifts. A company logo or a short appreciation message. For more on business orders, see our post about designing custom boards for businesses.

The best engraving ideas are the ones that mean something specific to the person receiving the board. If there is an inside joke, a meaningful phrase, or a date that carries special weight, that personal context is what elevates the gift from thoughtful to unforgettable.

Engraving and Longevity

A common question we hear is whether engraving will wear away over time. The answer is no, as long as the engraved area is not used as a cutting surface. This is why placement matters. We position engravings in areas that see minimal knife contact, and the engraving depth is calibrated to be permanent without compromising the structural integrity of the wood.

As the board develops a patina over time, the engraving ages with it. The contrast may soften slightly as the surrounding wood deepens in color, but the engraving itself remains crisp and legible. Many of our customers report that their engraved boards look even better after a few years of use, as the wood's natural aging process gives the engraving a settled, timeless quality.

Regular care with mineral oil and beeswax keeps the entire board, including the engraved area, in excellent condition. Our care guide has all the details on maintaining your board for decades of use.

Getting Started with Custom Engraving

Adding engraving to a custom piece is easy. When you submit a custom order request, just let us know that you are interested in engraving and share whatever details you have. It could be as simple as "I want our family name on a walnut board" or as specific as a logo file and exact placement instructions. We will work with you from there.

A small personal detail on a handmade piece of wood can carry enormous meaning. If you have been thinking about a custom engraved board for your kitchen or as a gift for someone you care about, we would love to help you bring it to life.
